MAJOR: Kent Hughes confirms trade rumors involving Samuel Montembeault
At the beginning of the season, we had absolutely no idea which goalie would be number one or which one might be traded. All three were dependent on their performances.
Cayden Primeau had a slight setback, but he has been performing so well since the start of the season that it changed the plans. For Samuel Montembeault, it's even more evident.
The Homatown goalie is undoubtedly the go-to guy between the posts. However, he could have ended up with another team, and that was confirmed by Kent Hughes.
With a new contract in hand, Montembeault has unofficially won the position of number one goalie in the organization. If the option to trade him was considered in the past, it is no longer on the table.
"It's not our plan. It was certainly part of the discussions since he was approaching free agency. If we wanted to trade Sam, we wouldn't have signed him, as goalies are easier to trade without a contract. If Sam continues to play this way, he will have another contract coming up that will pay him even more," Hughes said on TVA Sports.
Samuel has mentioned since last year that he wants to sign a contract extension with the Habs. If he was part of trade discussions, as Hughes confirms, it means there was indeed interest in him.
Fortunately, he stayed with the team and signed his contract. His performances are worthy of the best goalies in the league, and Hughes is already talking about his next lucrative contract, even though he hasn't started his three-year deal yet.
It's really encouraging for the future. Bravo, Sam, you truly deserve all the good things happening!
