Major acquisition of a first-round pick for the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Jake Allen or Cayden Primeau?
This is quite surprising as a statement. According to TSN 690, Kent Hughes could fetch up to a second or even a first-round pick for Jake Allen or Cayden Primeau.
"We know that Kent Hughes has his price and doesn't really want to deviate from it. And on TSN 690 this morning, Brian Wilde mentioned that realistically, Allen or Primeau could bring in a second-round pick or even a first-round pick. Wow."
It's known that the Maple Leafs offered a 6th-round pick for Allen, and according to Pierre LeBrun, other teams have also offered late-round picks. There is interest, but not at the asking price.
And Hughes won't deviate from his price.
"Kent Hughes is clever enough to have a high price and keep it for as long as it takes. That's how he negotiates." - Brian Wilde
Wilde adds that the Canadiens have so many quality prospects and other good picks coming in the next few years that a late-round pick doesn't hold much value. It shouldn't change much for the current or projected lineup in five years, and I tend to agree. However, the three-way rotation must stop.
If Hughes is indeed able to get so much for Allen or Primeau, it will be quite a home run. The Canadiens' GM was in a vulnerable position, and it seems like he's able to turn the situation to his advantage.
We'll see by March 8th.
