Major transaction between the Canadiens and the Flyers involving David Reinbacher and Cutter Gauthier rejected by Kent Hughes: We have the details
Last week, journalist Charlie O'Connor, who covers the Philadelphia Flyers, revealed significant information regarding an offer that Daniel Brière made to Kent Hughes.
Indeed, the Flyers' GM proposed Cutter Gauthier to the Canadiens in exchange for the 5th overall pick in 2023 to also select David Reinbacher. Kent Hughes declined.
This information was confirmed by Arpon Basu and Marc-Antoine Godin. The two former colleagues added the reason why the Canadiens' general manager turned down this offer.
"I dug a bit during the draft in Nashville, and I can say that the Canadiens turned down several offers for the 5th pick (David Reinbacher) because it was either problematic, or because the proposed players' ceilings did not match Reinbacher's in their eyes.
The Canadiens compare Reinbacher to Noah Dobson, so they were expecting an offer equivalent to what the Islanders would have for Dobson. As for Cutter Gauthier's offer, he is the 5th pick of a weak draft, whereas Reinbacher is the 5th pick of a strong draft. That makes all the difference."
- Arpon Basu The Flyers could have thus selected the Austrian at the 5th overall pick since they knew the Coyotes had their eye on him and wouldn't take Matvei Michkov. Therefore, Daniel Brière would have acquired both Reinbacher and Michkov in the same draft.
It is worth noting that Kent Hughes also rejected an offer from the Predators. The future star goaltender Yaroslav Askarov and the 15th overall pick in exchange for Reinbacher, as he was the player they were targeting at the 5th pick as well.
With the Norris Trophy-caliber season that Dobson is currently having, if David Reinbacher becomes as good as him, the Canadiens will have quite a defenseman on their hands.
