Major turnaround in the NHL waivers: The Canadiens have a golden opportunity to select a promising young defender
In the last few minutes, the Pittsburgh Penguins have caused a surprise by announcing that the 23-year-old young defender, Ty Smith, has been placed on waivers.
It is really surprising that a player of his caliber is available for free, especially since he was acquired in exchange for the excellent John Marino last summer.
The 17th overall pick in 2018 had performed well in 2022-2023, amassing 4 points in 9 games with the Penguins. He also collected 24 points in 39 games in the American league.
Earning only $775,000 this season, there is no doubt that he will be claimed in the next few hours. He could indeed represent a very interesting option for the Montreal Canadiens, who are in great need of an offensive defenseman to accompany Mike Matheson on the power play.
Since his arrival in the NHL, the defender native to Lloydminster has accumulated 8 goals and 39 assists (47 points) in 123 games.
Will Kent Hughes take a chance with the young defender?
