Let's remind ourselves that these proposals are simply meant to spark exciting debates among fans. Here's one that has generated a lot of reactions, involving a blockbuster trade between the Minnesota Wild and Marc-André Fleury:
The idea behind this exchange for the Wild is to clear the final year of the Quebecois goaltender's contract to make room for a new deal with the talented young goalie Filip Gustavsson, who is seen as the true future in the team's net, alongside the promising Jesper Wallstedt.
With a tight salary cap situation, by shedding Fleury's $3.5 million contract to sign Gustavsson, and having $5.3 million available in cap space, the team's GM Bill Guerin would have the means to invest in a player who could immediately contribute to the Wild's success, such as Josh Anderson. He is a player tailor-made for this team and has the necessary talent to make a deep playoff run.
From the Canadiens' perspective, by freeing up Anderson's contract, Kent Hughes would create cap space, saving $2 million immediately for the following year, and subsequently, three years at $5.5 million. Additionally, the addition of a first-round pick would be a valuable asset for Anderson's services, as well as Caeden Bankier, who is an interesting prospect.
Although on paper, this scenario might work for both teams, it seems unlikely that such a trade would happen. The Habs already have two NHL-contracted goalies in Jake Allen and Samuel Montembeault, and Fleury has a no-movement clause, which means he could refuse to join the Canadiens if he doesn't want to end his career with a rebuilding team.
Nevertheless, if this offer ended up on your desk as the Canadiens' GM, would you accept this trade?
