All players and coaches who had the chance to work with Marc-André Fleury will testify without reserve to his remarkable personality and exceptional character as a teammate.
However, last night, he was put in a difficult situation when his head coach, Dean Evason, called him to play less than 48 hours after his young teammate, Filip Gustavsson, was the hero of the first game. This situation was challenging for Fleury as he was on the road.
Gustavsson delivered a remarkable performance, making 51 saves on 53 shots. This created considerable pressure for Fleury, who had to live up to the high expectations set by his teammate's exceptional performance.
Unfortunately, Fleury couldn't maintain the momentum and conceded seven goals on 31 shots, resulting in a 7-3 loss for his team. During the post-game press conference, it was evident that Fleury was deeply affected by this defeat, showing signs of shame and great disappointment. It was really unpleasant to see.
Here is a summary, via the TVA Sports article "Shame overtakes Marc-André Fleury."
"You know, I wanted to step up and give my team a chance to stay in the game and win it. That's not what I did. I gave up too many goals. Basically, I didn't make the key saves."
"It's not the start I was hoping for. I don't know when my last game was, but I have to fix it. I've played this sport long enough and had good practices before. It shouldn't have happened."
- Marc-André Fleury
Fleury took full responsibility for the defeat, but his teammates and coach all expressed their support for him during interviews.
We can hope that Fleury can recover from this defeat and come back strong. He certainly deserves all of our support and encouragement.
