At the 2023 NHL Draft, the Canadiens decided, against all expectations, to select defenseman David Reinbacher with the 5th overall pick.

This decision was highly controversial, and it still is today. The Canadiens already have a strong defensive prospect pool, while there is a serious lack of offensive firepower.

Bypassing a potential future generational player in Matvei Michkov to ultimately choose Reinbacher is not what the fans wanted, and they made their displeasure known to the organization.

However, the Canadiens had reasons for not selecting Michkov. According to them, managing his development in the KHL would be very complicated, and from the start, he was being sidelined by his team. So, he was loaned to another team, and he is performing exceptionally well.

On the other hand, David Reinbacher is playing on a very poor team, and the results are catastrophic. So much so that their head coach, who had a good relationship with the Habs, has just been fired.

"Habs management didn't draft Michkov because they couldn't trust how his development would pan out in Russia, so they drafted Reinbacher.

Gotta love the #GoHabsGo scouting methodology"

Obviously, this is sarcastic. Only time will tell if the Canadiens' scouts were right, but for now, it's impossible not to be bitter about this decision. They seem to have missed the mark significantly.

Michkov has 24 points in 25 games with Sochi HC. Such a collection at 18 in the KHL is more than excellent.
