The NHL made a rather unexpected announcement ahead of the next season. Indeed, teams will no longer be allowed to wear "special" jerseys during warm-ups in 2023-2024. This decision is far from unanimous among fans who loved to see their favorite players sporting a different jersey before the game.
"Teams will not wear special jerseys during warm-ups next season." - Elliotte Friedman
This decision comes a few months after some players such as Ivan Provorov, Ilya Samsonov, Eric Staal, Marc Staal, Ilya Lyubushkin, and James Reimer refused to wear the Pride Nights jersey in support of the LGBTQ+ community, which quickly created a huge controversy across the NHL.
Provorov's actions were greatly contested, especially since he had to provide new explanations to Blue Jackets fans after being traded a few days ago.
It's disappointing to see that Gary Bettman decided to make such a decision when we all know that these themed nights provided huge visibility and raised funds for very important causes within our society.
There is no doubt that this new rule is likely to cause a lot of discussion in the coming days!
