Gabriel Perreault is one of the best prospects for the 2023 NHL Draft, ranking 10th in North America according to the latest list published by the NHL Central Scouting. Although the 18-year-old represents the American team on the international stage, the son of Yanic Perreault is originally from Sherbrooke.
Gabriel Perreault had a remarkable season, breaking a record held by none other than Auston Matthews. Indeed, the forward collected 53 goals and 79 assists (132 points) in 63 games with the American under-18 program, dethroning the 117-point mark set by the Leafs star in 2014-2015. He also finished ahead of his teammate Will Smith, who is considered a surefire top-5 pick.
The prospect didn't expect to have such a productive season, but seeing his name alongside players who excel in the NHL is certainly a great recognition.
"I wouldn't have predicted that before the start of the season. I was playing with very good players in Will Smith and Ryan Leonard. We had an incredible complicity. Will and I broke the record. That's really special. I look at Matthews, Hughes, and Keller in the NHL. I think it's cool to see my name with them."
The forward capped off his magnificent season by winning the gold medal with the American team at the Under-18 World Championship held in Switzerland. He notably finished second in points with an impressive haul of 5 goals and 13 assists in just 7 games.
Gabriel Perreault did not hide his wish to be selected by the Montreal Canadiens or the Chicago Blackhawks in the upcoming draft.
"Chicago and Montreal would be the two teams for a dream scenario."
