It has been a while now that Vancouver Canucks forward Conor Garland has been on the trade market. While he is by no means a bad player, Garland has a salary of $4.95 million per year for another two years, which does not sit well with the Canucks.

According to the informant Eklund, Garland's value is considered negative, so the Montreal Canadiens could acquire him along with a draft pick and/or a prospect in exchange for future considerations, somewhat similar to the Sean Monahan trade. However, the sticking point is that the Canucks are reluctant to retain more than 30% of his salary.

"I know [the Canadiens] are currently talking to Vancouver about Connor Garland, and would love to make that deal if the Canucks were to take 50% of the salary. Currently I hear that Vancouver is stuck around 30 to 35% of the salary. This feels almost too close of a difference to imagine a deal couldn't get done. Marty St. Louis apparently is pushing hard for this one"

This is just a rumor, but it's generating a lot of buzz, especially since it's exactly the type of transaction that Kent Hughes favors. We don't know if it's true, but one thing is certain, the Canadiens' GM would benefit from negotiating this type of trade, as he has salary cap space and needs to fill gaps while waiting for the young players to be ready.
