Trade between the Washington Capitals and the Montreal Canadiens: It would involve forwards Joel Armia and Anthony Mantha
That's major news. According to information from David Pagnotta, Kent Hughes is reportedly working on a trade that would bring Anthony Mantha to Montreal.
"I'm told that the Canadiens did indeed have a conversation with the Washington Capitals about Anthony Mantha, and forward Joel Armia was part of the discussion." - Pagnotta It appears to be a good player exchange that simply doesn't work for one team as it does for the other.
The advantage for the Canadiens is that Mantha will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the current season. The advantage for the Capitals is that they could save $2 million on their salary cap this year, but they would still have the hefty $3.4 million contract of the Finnish player next year.
We know Anthony Mantha is a big-bodied forward capable of scoring goals, with two seasons of over 20 goals in his career.
It's true that he hasn't produced at the level expected from a $5.7 million contract, especially since he hasn't recorded any points this year. Nevertheless, Kent Hughes has the cap space for his contract, and he would have one less issue to worry about for the following year.
And who knows, maybe the Longueuil native could surprise with the Canadiens. Playing for his childhood team might reinvigorate him. To be continued.
