Very Rare Event in NHL Waivers: A Decision is Made, and There's a Surprise
As we mentioned earlier today, San Jose Sharks forward Kevin Labanc was on the verge of being placed on waivers, but the team had a change of heart.
Indeed, following a discussion with the player, the San Jose management decided that he could stay, for a reason unknown to us. It's quite a peculiar situation.
It appears that the California team had to waive someone today, and it ended up being defenseman Radim Simek. It's worth noting that both Labanc and Simek have been regulars on the team for several seasons.
In the category of surprises, Ottawa Senators' enforcer, Zack MacEwen, was also placed on waivers, but not for the same reason. Ottawa is struggling to stay under the salary cap, and Shane Pinto remains unsigned because of this.
It wouldn't be surprising if he gets claimed, as the trend of enforcers is making a comeback in the Bettman's league.
