A Canadiens defenseman is criticized by his GM, and Kent Hughes needs to act
The Canadiens have a strong prospect pool on defense, and one of them is quite unknown, even though he wasn't selected by Kent Hughes.
Indeed, Dmitri Kostenko was selected 87th overall in 2021 by Marc Bergevin and Trevor Timmins.
Since then, he has been playing in the VHL, but his progress has been nonexistent. He is very offensive, but he keeps making the same mistakes and refuses to learn.
His general manager, Sergei Gusev, works closely with the Canadiens and Nick Bobrov on his development. According to him, Kostenko will never reach the NHL with this attitude.
"He doesn't want to learn, he just wants to do his own thing, Gusev lamented. You tell him not to make the cross-ice pass, and he'll still give the puck to the opponent.
I've talked to him several times. I told him, 'Listen, if you want to play in the NHL, you need to do this and that...' He gives the impression of listening, you know, he says he understands and that he'll do his best. But then the game comes, and he does the same nonsense.
And if you don't put him on the power play, he sulks. He doesn't say anything, but you can see it in his body language. He drives me crazy, seriously." - Sergei Gusev
These are very sad words for a player aspiring to play in the NHL. Even Bobrov finds that his progress has stalled, and GM Gusev wasn't afraid to tell him the truth.
"I told him the same things. Bobrov told me that he's been following this guy for two years and nothing has changed. I wasn't surprised to hear that." - Sergei Gusev
It's really unfortunate to see such a talented prospect refuse to do the right things and listen to the advice given to him.
He has all the potential in the world, but he's clearly not playing in a way that will help him progress to the professional level.
When a general manager gets to the point of saying this about a player, it starts to be very revealing.
