With one week left until August and training camp quickly approaching, the Canadiens have yet to finalize this type of trade. While the first line seems already confirmed in everyone's mind with Caufield, Suzuki, and Slafkovsky, the second line appears to be missing an element. The names of Kirby Dach and Alex Newhook are regularly mentioned in the top-6, but the crucial sixth forward to complete this top-6 remains very uncertain.
Several players from the 2023-2024 team could fill the top-6 role temporarily, but maintaining consistency over an 82-game season seems doubtful.
Indeed, journalists from the United States refuse to let the matter drop and continue to link Kaliyev's name to the Montreal Canadiens.
Normally, rumors originate from here, but in Kaliyev's case, they come from over there.
According to a recent publication by The Hockey News and journalist Lyle Richardson, Arthur Kaliyev's stay in Los Angeles could be coming to an end as he remains a restricted free agent (RFA).
Richardson also believes that the 23-year-old forward could be an interesting option for the Canadiens:
This has just been published, and it's becoming evident that several American sources are linking Arthur Kaliyev to Montreal. At the same time, we don't know the asking price for the Russian. Will the Canadiens be willing to pay it, and has Arthur Kaliyev shown consistency in his game since being drafted?
This will be a story to follow until October, but don't be surprised if Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton take a chance, especially if the price is low. It would have to be, since several players more interesting than Kaliyev are currently on Kent Hughes' radar.
Kaliyev, a 33rd overall pick in 2019, is a 6-foot-2, 210-pound winger who was incredible in junior hockey. His offensive production of 105 goals and 95 assists in his last two seasons with the Hamilton Bulldogs is enough to excite fans. However, junior hockey and professional hockey are worlds apart!
In the NHL, he has scored 35 goals and 36 assists (71 points) in 188 games with the Los Angeles Kings, but it feels like his potential is much higher than that. He could reach the 30-goal mark within two or three seasons in a winning context.
In a system like the one favored by Martin St-Louis, do you believe he could flourish and become a home run for Kent Hughes?
According to various Los Angeles journalists, the Kings would like to trade Kaliyev for a prospect with a lower ceiling but a higher floor. Essentially, a younger role player with specific skills in certain game situations.
Some have mentioned Florian Xhekaj or Emil Heineman.
Would you trade Florian Xhekaj or Heineman for Kaliyev?
