Kent Hughes never sleeps, and he is making Tricolore fans dream. According to renowned Sportsnet journalist Elliotte Friedman, the Montreal Canadiens did everything they could to add goaltender Yaroslav Askarov to their 2024-2025 lineup.

Considered the best goaltending prospect in the NHL at 22 years old, Askarov ultimately ended up with the San Jose Sharks. In return, Nashville received prospect David Edstrom (32nd overall pick in 2023), a first-round pick in 2025, and goaltender Magnus Chrona.

Open secret: The Montreal Canadiens made a trade offer to acquire Yaroslav Askarov, but what was that offer?

Expert Simon Boisvert weighed in on the matter.

Simon Boisvert comments on the Montreal Canadiens' trade offer to the Nashville Predators for Yaroslav Askarov

On BPM Sports, he speculated on the possible offer submitted by the Canadiens. Here's what the trade might have looked like:

- A first-round pick from the Flames or the Panthers of 2025 (the pick that Montreal will inherit at the end of the regular season)

And

- Owen Beck, who was the 33rd overall pick in 2022.

It's possible that a goaltender like Jakub Dobes would have been included in the trade to replace Magnus Chrona in the Sharks' offer. In any case, the Nashville Predators preferred San Jose's offer.

According to Boisvert, it's probably because they simply liked Edstrom better than Beck. Owen Beck is seen more as a top-9 forward, while Edstrom is identified as a potential top-4 player on a championship team.

If this is the case, would you have accepted trading Owen Beck, the first-round pick from FLA/CGY, and a goaltender like Jakub Dobes for Yaroslav Askarov?

Considering the two-year contract extension signed by Askarov, it would have been interesting for the Canadiens, especially for a two-year window. He would have been a solid partner for Samuel Montembeault. At the same time, Jacob Fowler could develop into that type of young, talented goaltender within the Canadiens' organization. Who knows, Fowler might even be as good as or better than the Russian at 22.
