As the saying goes, could we witness a third such transaction? After all, things often come in threes!
In Nashville, well-informed journalists believe that young forward Philip Tomasino's days with the Preds might be numbered.
Although he is considered a quality prospect with a promising future, the change in direction initiated by the team's general management with three major signings might force them to trade a young prospect to fill a gap or continue the team's upward trajectory.
With an offense that includes Filip Forsberg, Ryan O'Reilly, Gustav Nyquist, Steven Stamkos, and Jonathan Marchessault, spots in the top-6 are becoming scarce. This means that Tommy Novak, Luke Evangelista, Juuso Parssinen, Philip Tomasino, and a few other good young forwards in the organization will have to compete for a top-6 spot.
Many sources believe that it will indeed be young Tomasino who will be affected. Head coach Andrew Brunette has not shown much confidence in him since taking over. He's lukewarm towards him!
The message is clear.
At 23 years old, Tomasino is a 6-foot, 179-pound forward. In the 2019 draft, he was the 24th overall pick (1st round). This is the same draft in which Kirby Dach, Cole Caufield, and Alex Newhook were selected.
Tomasino amassed 100 points, including 40 goals, in his last season in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). In his rookie season in the American Hockey League, he added a very impressive 32 points in 29 games, and he has accumulated 70 points in the NHL.
Montreal could be a viable option for him, and he perfectly fits the profile of a player Kent Hughes is looking for in a top-9 or even top-6 role. A line with Newhook, Dach, and Tomasino could be interesting within a year or two.
This is therefore an additional option to keep in mind for the Canadiens.
