It's confirmed for Kent Hughes, and he's not letting go
Let's forget about the rumors involving Kent Hughes and the Canadiens, and names like Patrik Laine and Martin Necas.
According to Marco D'Amico, who received a tip from a credible NHL source, the plan would be to aim for a heavy contract for compensation.
"Now that he has sorted out all his restricted free agents, Montreal Canadiens General Manager Kent Hughes could turn to his secret weapon: salary cap space, which possibly includes the long-term injured reserve list.
This is what a 'well-placed' source working in the NHL told journalist Marco D'Amico."
TVA Sports has also shared the news, which adds credibility to this source.
Kent Hughes already has $5.5 million in cap space, and with Carey Price's contract on long-term injured reserve, he has about $16 million to maneuver.
With the rebuild not yet complete and the cap space set to increase next summer, Hughes could make one final big move, similar to the Sean Monahan deal.
Recall that in August 2022, the GM acquired Monahan and a first-round pick in exchange for future considerations, then traded the forward for another first-round pick.
"Montreal is in an enviable position with an owner [Geoff Molson] who is willing to spend up to the cap, and even exceed it if necessary,» explained the source.
The Canadiens have $5.5 million at their disposal, but putting Carey Price's $10.5 million contract on long-term injured reserve opens the door to all sorts of possibilities."
