Indeed, two years ago, Xhekaj was one of the great stories in the NHL in a similar situation and earned his spot on the team. A big accomplishment for him.
During the 2024 camp, it's quite the opposite, as his game is disjointed and he spends more time in the penalty box or in the locker room than on the ice.
Arber Xhekaj is very useful to the Canadiens when he doesn't cross the line and avoids the penalty box. There's a way to do the enforcer's job without dropping the gloves every time.
He is therefore losing his spot in the top 6 on defense to Jayden Struble. However, we can't do without him and his tough qualities, especially for the season opener on October 9 against the Maple Leafs.
So Bob Hartley would send Arber Xhekaj to offense, to ensure that he has the best top 6 dressed and to have Arber around.
Personally, I would play Arber Xhekaj on defense instead of Justin Barron. The sheriff has shown that he has a good shot and offensive skills, but I much prefer him as a defenseman.
