Furthermore, other teams will want a quality return, and what the Canadiens have in quality prospects is found among their defensemen.
Trevor Zegras has been linked to the Canadiens for a year now, and we've learned in recent days that Pat Verbeek is looking to acquire a right-handed defenseman, as well as a right-handed forward.
This is where journalist Mathias Brunet made a proposal that is causing a reaction. Personally, I wouldn't do it. It involves Logan Mailloux.
Definitely, Zegras's value is declining. His tougher season, injuries, and perilous negotiations with the Ducks don't really give Verbeek much room to maneuver.
I would be very surprised if a team paid that much to acquire Zegras right now. This price is more based on what he has accomplished, but at the moment, he's not worth that.
To add to that, Logan Mailloux is a stud, a defenseman that the Canadiens need for several years. His skating and shot already belong to the elite.
Joel Armia would be included solely to clear salary, and the Jets' first-round pick in 2024 would complete the trade.
Certainly, Zegras is not a nobody, but Mailloux represents the future of the club on defense. He will surely be in the team's top 3. Imagine him and Lane Hutson on the power play, it would be devastating and would remind us of the glory days of Andrei Markov and PK Subban.
I sincerely believe that the price would be too high and that Pat Verbeek will give Zegras time to have a good season before trading him, if that's his plan.
