Departure of Gary Bettman from the NHL: it becomes very clear
Gary Bettman has been the NHL commissioner for over 30 years, making it the longest tenure in the history of professional sports.
He is practically a dinosaur in his position, in every sense of the word. He has been imposing, he has been important, but he is now outdated.
A quote clearly demonstrates why he must leave, and it's what's on everyone's lips right now. Bettman is no longer the man for the job.
«Gary Bettman is an unloved genius.
No, no, I am not a fanatic of Gary Bettman. [...] Bettman is a cold man, as charismatic as a rock, and he has a relatively low emotional level, if not non-existent.
And the NHL needed such a man, and I did say needed!
The NHL has never been better.» - Via DLC
It's the follow-up that confirms what we think.
«But Bettman must go.
However, all good things must come to an end. Bettman put the NHL back on the map and the league is healthy. Its foundations are solid. But is he the best man for the next step: rejuvenating the fan base? The answer is no.» - Via DLC
Unfortunately, the site Dans les Coulisses is right. Bettman is no longer the man for the job and there are numerous proofs of this.
Firstly, the Ottawa Senators announced a trade 15 minutes before Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. Then, Connor McDavid did not show up to accept the Conn Smythe Trophy.
His management of the Arizona Coyotes, teams that voluntarily exceed the salary cap in the playoffs, marketing, in short, there are many things to change.
We must not wait until the NHL is at its lowest to change commissioners.
