Departure of Martin St-Louis from the Montreal Canadiens: André Roy gives a very emotional testimony
Martin St-Louis and André Roy were teammates in Tampa Bay, where they even lifted the Stanley Cup together. The former enforcer joined the many close associates of the Montreal Canadiens' coach in delivering a very emotional testimony.
Indeed, following Michel Therrien, who spoke about how difficult it is for Martin and the decision to temporarily leave the team, it was André Roy's turn to offer a touching testimony.
Roy's words clearly demonstrate the greatness of the man Martin St-Louis is and how much of a leader he is wherever he goes. It's not new that he spends individual time with players.
"I played my minor hockey against Martin St-Louis. I was a good player back then too. Then I had to change my style. I remember there were games where I only played one or two shifts (in Tampa Bay).
Coming back on the plane, I was angry because I hadn't played much or contributed. But Martin took the time to come sit on the plane with me and said, 'You know, André? You are really important to this team. The role you have is tough, but don't just think about fighting. You can play hockey. I know you and I've seen you play. The last game, when you fought with Parros, and we scored those two goals, you were directly responsible for that. Don't forget it.' Just the fact that he took the time to talk to me like that, I was like 'wow.'"
- André Roy
It's not surprising then that Tampa Bay won a Stanley Cup with Martin St-Louis. There were other very good players, but what Martin brings to his surroundings is extremely powerful.
The Montreal Canadiens have a gem on their hands. I understand why Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton are already comfortable saying they will extend his contract.
