Favoritism: Patrik Laine reportedly about to receive a pass from Martin St-Louis
Patrik Laine is an exceptionally talented player, but his commitment in his own zone has always been questioned, as he is often labeled a one-dimensional player.
Indeed, the forward is a goal-scoring machine and an offensive creator, but his defensive play has been lacking, which is not always appreciated by the organization.
Just look at what Martin St-Louis has done with Cole Caufield, who has become a much better all-around player following the last season.
Favoritism for Patrik Laine?
According to Pierre McGuire, the Canadiens might allow Laine to play in a style that suits him, focusing purely on offense. McGuire even compared Laine to Vincent Lecavalier, who received similar treatment in Tampa Bay when he was a teammate of Martin St-Louis.
It's clear that letting Patrik Laine express himself with his goal-scoring prowess might be a great idea, but I doubt it aligns with what the Canadiens are looking for.
All players, including Cole Caufield, who was seen as the next 50-goal scorer, must give their all in every aspect of the game within Martin St-Louis's system.
I strongly doubt that it would be any different for Patrik Laine, even if it means giving him more chances to score. The message it would send to the rest of the team might be too negative, in my opinion.
