Habs: Michael Matheson would be worth gold and we have the details
Undoubtedly, the best defenseman for the Canadiens this season and last season has been Michael Matheson.
With 62 points in 82 games, he has been simply dominant.
According to David Ettedgui, Matheson would be worth between a 6th and 15th draft pick. That's significant, considering he didn't cost the Canadiens much.
Mathias Brunet and Martin Lemay have weighed in on the matter, and their opinions differ.
Mathias believes that the Canadiens couldn't afford to refuse a 6th overall pick for Matheson.
"Sixth overall pick, in a situation where you know you're not ready to win the Stanley Cup, you definitely do it! [...] In two years, you have David Reinbacher coming up, you have Lane Hutson who will be there... [...] In any case, Matheson will be a free agent in two years!" Here's the other side of the coin:
"If you trade Matheson this year, what will your top 3 look like in two years? Because in two years, you want to be in the playoffs, and you won't get there with a top 3 without him! [...] He plays 25 minutes per game!"
Regardless, Michael Matheson has two years left on his contract and will become an unrestricted free agent.
I personally believe that we should wait at least a year to see where the team is heading before making a decision with him. For now, I wouldn't trade the defenseman.
