At least, that's what he's attempting on the power play, as the two practiced on the second unit, along with Alex Newhook, Joshua Roy, and Lane Hutson.
Martin St-Louis is definitely preparing a strong second wave for the umbrella formation, meaning a defenseman at the blue line to distribute the puck (Lane Hutson), two forwards on the sides ready to shoot (Patrik Laine and Alex Newhook), and two forwards crashing the net (Brendan Gallagher and Joshua Roy).
That's my perception of things, and I find it very interesting. The second wave won't face the opposing team's best defensive players, and if they do, they'll have already been on the ice for some time.
Lane Hutson is simply incredible at maneuvering along the blue line and spotting passing lanes, while Patrik Laine on the left and Alex Newhook on the right can fire without warning.
There's no need to remind anyone of Brendan Gallagher's skills in front of the net, who will be supported by the younger Joshua Roy, who has a more imposing size.
That's the approach Martin St-Louis has tried. It's not set in stone, but it's an attempt that I find interesting. After all, Lane Hutson and Patrik Laine should earn their ice time on the first unit.
