Ivan Demidov in Carolina: aborted monster trade
Certainly, Ivan Demidov was a highly sought-after player in the draft, and it was ultimately the Canadiens who had the chance to select him.
However, Kent Hughes came very close to having the rug pulled out from under him, as at least two teams tried everything to acquire the 4th overall pick from the Blue Jackets, but to no avail.
Firstly, the Blackhawks aimed for a double top 5, offering their unprotected 1st round pick and another pick to the Jackets for their 4th overall pick, but the trade fell through.
What we've learned from insider Elliotte Friedman is that the Carolina Hurricanes also made a strong attempt to acquire this 4th overall pick to select Demidov.
Friedman on 32TP: "I do think there were very serious conversations between Columbus and Carolina about the #4 pick, I do think that the Blue Jackets made Necas a contract offer with permission of the Hurricanes, obviously it didn't get done"

So, Martin Necas nearly became part of a blockbuster trade that would have brought Ivan Demidov to Carolina. This trade also fell through.
Word has it that Don Waddell and the Jackets were really high on Cayden Lindstrom. When they saw he was available, they possibly halted all negotiations.
When considering they were negotiating a contract extension with Necas, it came very close to happening.
Therefore, we can thank the Anaheim Ducks for causing a surprise with the selection of Beckett Sennecke. If they had taken Lindstrom, the final outcome could have been very different for the Canadiens.
