Fans have found their scapegoat in Mitch Marner, but let's be honest, logic would suggest that John Tavares should be the one to leave the ship. At 33 years old, he has less left in the tank than before.
With 65 points in 80 games this year, it's his second-worst season in terms of points per game. Only his rookie season was less productive.
Tavares is on the decline, but he can still greatly contribute and produce between 50 and 60 points for several seasons. The Canadiens could benefit from this, especially since his monstrous $11 million per year contract ends next summer.
Arpon Basu and Marc Antoine Godin have discussed the matter. According to Arpon, John Tavares could come to Montreal in exchange for a contract like Josh Anderson's. That would free up cap space for the Leafs.
According to Godin, it won't happen. He has a no-move clause and will remain in Toronto until the end of his contract.
All of this is speculation, but in the meantime, the Montreal Canadiens organization has posted a goal scored by Team Canada at the World Championships. This goal was scored by Kaiden Guhle, assisted by John Tavares.
Is this a premonitory post by the Habs organization? We'll find out by July 1, 2025!
