Kent Hughes about to make a move: is a major unexpected acquisition coming?
When we talk about the rumors between the Canadiens and the Hurricanes, it's directly believed to involve Kent Hughes and Martin Necas.
Necas' name has been linked to the Canadiens for several weeks, but the situation has significantly changed in Carolina, with the young man opting for arbitration.
Additionally, Evgeny Kuznetsov decided to end his contract and move to the KHL, freeing up salary cap space.
In short, Martin Necas has never been less likely to be traded than right now, and Kuznetsov's departure will undoubtedly influence the Canadiens' plans.
Kuznetsov is leaving for SKA St. Petersburg, where he signed a four-year deal. With him in the lineup, there are now 17 forwards under contract there.
"Thus, Demidov, the Montreal Canadiens' prospect, finds himself far down the hierarchy of the powerful KHL club. According to EliteProspects, he is the 17th forward with a contract in Saint Petersburg and, by far, the youngest." - TVA Sports
Obviously, among them is Ivan Demidov, who will likely just pass through before joining the Canadiens next year. The organization is likely to focus its efforts elsewhere rather than helping the young player develop.
If he is sent down to the MHL or VHL, it would be detrimental to his development as he would plateau upon arrival, and Kent Hughes might intervene.
"Could the Canadiens be tempted to intervene in this matter to support Demidov's learning and progression during his last year under contract in Russia? Negotiating to have his contract in Russia terminated is one of the possibilities open to general manager Kent Hughes." - TVA Sports
The future will tell, but one thing is certain: this young prodigy shouldn't be left in the MHL or VHL. He has too much talent to have his progression halted so abruptly.
