The young and undersized defenseman is different from the others. He has what it takes to be among the elite in the NHL at his position, but he must continue to develop properly and prove that his small size is not a negative factor.
He is undoubtedly the future quarterback of the Canadiens' defense, and Kent Hughes and his scouting team showed great insight in selecting him 62nd overall. It's truly a steal, in my opinion.
Even prospect expert Scott Wheeler clearly states this. According to him, not only is Lane Hutson one of the best up-and-coming defensemen in the world, but he is the second-best of his draft year.
Indeed, Wheeler believes that Lane Hutson is better than all other defensemen drafted in 2022, except Simon Nemec. This is a significant statement, considering Nemec was selected 2nd overall.
In total, including Simon Nemec, 17 defensemen were selected before Lane Hutson in 2022. It's truly incredible that the Canadiens managed to secure him.
