Kent Hughes has done his homework to improve the Canadiens' offense this summer, but he might not be finished shopping yet.

Indeed, there is a highly promising young player who has yet to sign a contract for the upcoming season, and time is running out. Training camps start in the coming days, and general managers need to have their rosters set.

Dawson Mercer is a restricted free agent, and he will not attend the Devils' training camp without a contract. No agent would accept that.

According to Martin Leclerc, a good way to pry him away from New Jersey could be through an offer sheet.

"All that being said, there are certainly teams in the NHL right now looking at this situation and thinking that a player with such potential could be interesting. Martin Leclerc mentioned this on the radio. And one of the ways to get him out is via an offer sheet."

To have a chance at landing him, it would require offering $6 million per year, which translates to a 1st-round pick and a 3rd-round pick.

The Canadiens are in a rebuilding phase, and although the team has improved, the chances of finishing near the bottom of the standings and having a good draft pick next year are quite real.

In my opinion, Kent Hughes might not make an offer sheet, but it's very possible that another GM could be tempted. It's worth noting that there have already been two such instances this summer with Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway.
