Kent Hughes has yet to acquire a young forward as he had hoped on the trade market.

He has also been unable to sign any noteworthy free agents since the beginning of the month. His work this summer could be considered quite ordinary, if not a failure, up to this point.

Fortunately, the big news is the signing of Juraj Slafkovsky. Without it, the situation would be quite dire, but the GM still has the potential to surprise us.

A Bruins forward signed by Kent Hughes with James van Riemsdyk?

It's definitely a possibility. van Riemsdyk has slowed down over the years, but he still produced 38 points last season and would be a good veteran on a low-cost deal.

According to Marc-Olivier Beaudoin, signing him could be beneficial for several reasons.

"I know he's 35 years old, but with RHP's injury, I wouldn't be against the idea of giving James van Riemsdyk a one-year deal at around $1.5M.

The 6'3", 208-pound forward just had 38 points. The Canadiens have a spot on their top-six. And he could bring in an interesting pick at the trade deadline if he performs!

Not a must, but an interesting option with no risk!"

- Marc-Olivier Beaudoin

It's hard to disagree with him. He's certainly not the top plan for Kent Hughes, but in case of need, he could be a good insurance policy, signed short-term until the young players arrive.

We know that Kent Hughes declined to sign Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault, among others, because he didn't want to commit long-term to a veteran.
