Kent Hughes reveals very important information from his negotiations, and it sets the tone
Kent Hughes acquired Patrik Laine yesterday afternoon and addressed the media directly just minutes after the official announcement.
The Canadiens' GM emphasized multiple times how gracious his Blue Jackets counterpart was, praising him and thanking him for a favor he extended.
Indeed, Don Waddell allowed Kent Hughes, Jeff Gorton, and Martin St-Louis to speak with Patrik Laine before the trade, which helped facilitate their decision.
This was the first time he had such permission before acquiring a player. Typically, general managers grant such requests only in very specific cases, and this was one of them.
"Habs GM Kent Hughes says #CBJ GM Don Waddell allowed him, Jeff Gorton and Martin St-Louis the opportunity to speak to Laine directly over the weekend to have the conversations they felt they needed to have to be comfortable moving forward with the trade."

Thus, the transaction was completed on a very positive note. The Canadiens had the opportunity to ensure Laine's good mindset, and the player got a fresh start, which he also desired.
