Rumors about Kristopher Letang to Montreal aren't new. They started in 2022 and have resurfaced strongly this week.

Mark Madden reported that Letang asked the Penguins to be traded specifically to the Canadiens. This claim hasn't been denied by anyone, including Letang himself.

If it weren't true, it would have been publicly addressed by the Penguins or Letang, but instead, there's been radio silence.

TVA Sports has added to the speculation by reporting on this request. It's worth noting that Renaud Lavoie, a close friend of Letang, works for TVA Sports.

Letang has always expressed a desire to play for the Canadiens, a dream shared by many Quebecers. In 2022, there was hope he might sign with Montreal, but the Penguins made an offer he couldn't refuse: a 6-year deal at $6.1 million per year.

Kent Hughes would likely not have made such an offer. With this contract in place, trading Letang would be difficult, if not impossible, unless a significant portion of his contract is retained for the remaining four years.
