Major and unexpected departure of Martin St-Louis: we finally have news from the coach and his son Mason
Last season, Martin St-Louis had to step away for family reasons, as his son Mason was injured in hockey, and it seemed serious enough for him to leave the Canadiens.
Upon reflection, any father should act this way, and he absolutely did the right thing to leave, regardless of the Canadiens' record. His absence hurt the team, but his presence with his family was invaluable, and that alone is a victory.
Invited to the show Tout le monde en parle on Sunday night, Martin St-Louis was obviously asked about his son Mason and how he handled his absence.
For him, it's clear that everyone needed him at home.
"My son is doing very well. He has started skating again; he hasn't played yet, but... It's certain that these are tough times... You protect your children from many things, and he gets injured while practicing a sport he loves.
And I know there's a risk to playing hockey, but it was a difficult moment for my wife, especially, who witnessed all of this.
It really brought the family closer together. We had a great summer together, all five of us at home, and he is on a good path."
- Martin St-Louis
We still haven't had exact news about Mason's injury, but we know it was something that could have been very painful physically and mentally for the young man.
His presence made all the difference in supporting his son and wife. I'm really glad he left the team for such good reasons, even if the Canadiens were on the brink of the playoffs and it cost them a qualification.
