Major development for Steven Stamkos and the Canadiens, and it's confirmed
Kent Hughes is trying to acquire a young forward through a trade, but he has just received excellent news from the free agent market.
Indeed, it has been confirmed that Steven Stamkos will be free on July 1st. The star forward will be free to sign with the team of his choice.
"From Stamkos' agent Don Meehan, who tells me regarding his client:
«He will be a free agent on July 1.»
So would appear Stamkos is going to market Monday unless something changes in Tampa's position."
- Pierre LeBrun
This is huge news, especially since Stamkos is connected to the Canadiens through his ties with Martin St-Louis, Vincent Lecavalier, and Teddy Purcell.
At 34 years old, Stamkos has proven this year that he is still capable of performing, with 40 goals and 81 points. He would really help the Canadiens for several years.
I imagine that if the Lightning can't agree with him, it's because he's asking for too much money or too many years on the contract.
Now we just have to see if Kent Hughes is willing to give him what he's asking for.
