Arber Xhekaj has been the subject of various rumors and speculations for some time, leading many to believe that Kent Hughes might want to trade him.

The return could certainly be interesting, and we know that several teams could use his services.

Moreover, we have just received confirmation that Kent Hughes is receiving a lot of calls about his defenseman. Calls that lead nowhere.

"As recently as this week, teams continue to inquire with the Montreal Canadiens about defenseman Arber Xhekaj, but the Canadiens' general manager, Kent Hughes, continues to turn them down. Hughes is not interested in trading the solid defenseman, but he is willing to trade some of his other young defensemen."

This is an incredible statement. It thus confirms that Xhekaj is going nowhere and that he is highly valued by the organization.

It also confirms that a contract extension is certainly in the plans, as Xhekaj will be a restricted free agent on July 1.

The sheriff brings something that few players bring to their club: toughness, an enforcer role, while being a very good hockey player.

We saw at the end of the season how dominant he became alongside David Savard, all without taking stupid penalties.

Xhekaj will be an important asset for many years. He is built for the playoffs.
