We have learned in recent hours that the Montreal Canadiens were indeed in the running to acquire goalie Yaroslav Askarov, but Kent Hughes backed down.

In fact, the GM must have had a good reason not to complete a transaction with the Predators, but he was definitely among the five finalists to acquire a brilliant goalie in Askarov.

Pierre LeBrun confirmed this, and he added details about the price demanded by Barry Trotz.

The successor to Carey Price traded to Nashville?

According to the insider, Nashville's requests were quite straightforward and involved Jacob Fowler, the Canadiens' top prospect in goal and a likely successor to Carey Price.

"There's no way the Canadiens trade Fowler."

- Pierre LeBrun

As reported by the site Dans les Coulisses, the Canadiens' general manager categorically refused this request, and we understand why.

Personally, I am relieved to see that even a very bright goalie like Yaroslav Askarov did not convince Kent Hughes to trade Jacob Fowler.

Fowler is considered a superstar in the making by many analysts. Even Ryan Whitney compares him to Carey Price, Dominik Hasek, Patrick Roy, and Martin Brodeur.
