It's a fact, and we can move on. However, everyone thinks he will officially announce his departure at the end of his contract, and that might not be the case.
It's understood that all 30 NHL teams would have signed him to $10.5 million per year when he signed his contract. If Marc Bergevin didn't sign him, Carey was leaving to become an unrestricted free agent.
Unfortunately, injuries have taken their toll, but the contract wasn't so bad initially, in my opinion. Especially since it's somewhat designed to potentially end earlier.
Indeed, the majority of the contract money, Carey earned in the first six seasons. His 6th campaign will be the 2024-25 one, and then he'll have only two years and $2 million left to receive as a goaltender.
The rest of the money, he has already received in signing bonuses. However, he still counts for $10.5 million against the salary cap.
Carey has earned over $100 million in his career. Sure, no one would scoff at $2 million in salary, but will he do it to help the Canadiens? Can the organization offer him a remote position where his salary isn't public, and he could receive compensation?
These are possibilities. However, if Price decides to do this favor for the Canadiens and announce his retirement next summer, it will be quite a shock in the hockey world, and he will truly be perceived as a team player even after his career.
