New acquisition by Kent Hughes to replace Patrik Laine? He finally confirms his plan
Kent Hughes has made it clear that he wanted to add goals to his lineup, and he worked towards that by acquiring Patrik Laine.
Before confirming this transaction, we received confirmation that he had really tried to get Trevor Zegras and Martin Necas, but it didn't work out. Clearly, the GM was on a mission.
Now that Laine is injured for two to three months, the big question is whether Kent Hughes will try to make another trade to offset this loss. The team is currently at the same level as last year in terms of offense, without Patrik Laine.
It was Marc Antoine Godin who asked him, and the answer is quite clear.
"It's difficult to find a player who can replace Patrik for two months," the general manager pointed out. "We have some good young players internally. [...]
It's one thing to say we need a top 6 forward, but there were players available this summer that we didn't go after, who were of a certain caliber, and I'm not sure we'll find one for two months." - Kent Hughes
So it's clear: there won't be a rental player, especially not of Patrik Laine's caliber. The team will have to look internally to complete the pair of Alex Newhook and Kirby Dach.
Will young Oliver Kapanen earn a spot, or is Joshua Roy ready? That remains to be seen, but don't be surprised if there are several trials on this line during Patrik Laine's absence.
