Official statement from the Montreal Canadiens following the death of Johnny Gaudreau
It is with total shock that we learned overnight that Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew have died in a bicycle accident.
A drunk driver hit them from behind while they were riding on the shoulder of a road in New Jersey.
"According to reports, the driver, a 43-year-old man named Sean Higgins, has been arrested and is being held for causing death with a vehicle.
According to ABC, Higgins was driving his Jeep Grand Cherokee northbound on Route 551 when he found himself behind two vehicles, a sedan and an SUV. He reportedly passed the sedan by moving into the southbound lane and then ended up behind the SUV, which was approaching the two cyclists riding on the shoulder heading north. The SUV then moved towards the center of the road to give space to the Gaudreau brothers, and that's when Higgins attempted to pass it on the right, striking the two men from behind." - TVA Sports
The Montreal Canadiens organization is always very proactive in responding to such tragic news, and they have issued an official statement.
We join the Canadiens in offering our most sincere condolences to the family and friends of Johnny Gaudreau during this difficult time.
