Shocking announcement for Ivan Demidov, and it's disastrous for the Canadiens
Ivan Demidov's name is on the lips of every Canadiens fan right now, and for good reason, as he belongs to the team and is very talented.
Finally, the Canadiens have drafted a forward with the potential to score 100 points one day in the NHL, which hasn't been seen in decades.
The big problem, somewhat like Alexander Romanov a few years ago, is that Demidov will have to play in the KHL even though he has already mentioned he will come to North America in 2025-26.
The options available to him are to play big minutes in the KHL, play very little, like Romanov, or return to the MHL.
KHL teams are not known for giving a lot of responsibilities and, at the same time, helping develop a player who wants to leave the league, so the best-case scenario, playing in the top 6, is hard to envision.
"[If he stays in the KHL] we still have to make him play over there!
Clearly, the Canadiens hope the young man will have good responsibilities. I remember Alexander Romanov...
We were all eager to see him develop, he had been excellent at the World Junior Championship, we thought he would have an important role in the KHL... He wasn't even playing!"
- Anthony Marcotte
Theoretically, if Demidov is sent to the MHL, he could decide to come play with the Canadiens, but the best thing for his development would be to play against men in the KHL first.
If SKA St. Petersburg really decides to take revenge for Demidov's future departure to the NHL, his year could be very long and painful.
