Indeed, David Reinbacher injured his left leg just seconds into the game, while Patrik Laine had his knee demolished a few minutes later.
Cédric Paré delivered an unintentional but dangerous knee hit, and Laine was never able to get back up. When you look at the replays, you understand why, as his knee bent in the wrong direction.
The officials did not call a penalty on the play, and that's where things got out of hand.
Arber Xhekaj went after Paré moments later and pounded him with punches. He was ejected from the game for his actions, and I must admit it was the right decision, but it could have been avoided if the officials had acted against Paré.
As things unfolded, Arber Xhekaj learned he was receiving a fine today of over $3,000, something that Canadiens fans clearly do not tolerate.
HFTV launched a GoFundMe to pay this fine, and the community's participation was instant. As of this writing, $1,922 out of $3,386 has already been raised in 78 donations.
There was even someone named Cédric Paré who donated $5, but we can imagine that's a joke.
In any case, it's clear that fans have rallied behind Arber Xhekaj on this one. Personally, I don't condone his actions, but when the referees don't do their job properly, players are more tempted to take justice into their own hands.
I'm sure the sheriff will donate this amount to a charity, but he will greatly appreciate the support from Canadiens fans.
