The Jake Allen trade could come back to haunt Kent Hughes and the Canadiens very quickly
When looking at the big picture, the Jake Allen trade took some time to finalize, but it has been worthwhile. Finally, the Canadiens are playing with two goalies, and we can officially turn the page.
The only issue with this transaction is that Kent Hughes has just mortgaged himself until July 1st. This is also the reason why a player like Tanner Pearson was not traded.
Indeed, teams are allowed to retain salary on three players. There is no more room since Kent Hughes is retaining salary for Jake Allen, Jeff Petry, and Joel Edmundson.
"Montreal has now used all of its 3 salary retention slots for this season, and have 2 committed for next season - Edmundson's contract expires on July 1st, so there will be an available spot for the next season.
However, with players like Josh Anderson, Joel Armia, Brendan Gallagher, and David Savard likely to be available at the next trade deadline, maybe even before, not being able to retain salary could work against Hughes, as it did with Pearson.
