In a panic, Marc Bergevin filled the gaps in the attack with Christian Dvorak and Mike Hoffman, both acquired at a high cost.
Unfortunately, these poor signings and the team's atrocious performance at the start of the 2021-22 season cost Bergevin his job. Enough was enough, and Geoff Molson cleaned house.
Since then, Phillip Danault has never been replaced. Yes, Nick Suzuki is good, but Kirby Dach hasn't spent enough time at center (due to injuries) and hasn't officially earned the title of the second-line center.
There aren't many players like Phillip Danault in the NHL. He excels in defensive missions while also being able to accumulate his share of points.
According to Tony Marinaro and prospect expert Simon Boisvert, the 21st overall pick in the last draft, Michael Hage, is much better than the former Canadiens' number 24.
His skating, shooting, and vision are better, and he excels defensively, in addition to being a great leader.
Let's remember that Hage has gone through a lot, including the tragic death of his father and a significant injury. He came back a few weeks later, recharged, and never looked back.
Moreover, just like Danault, he has been a Canadiens fan all his life and speaks very good French. If he develops as expected, he won't just be a third-line center; he could become a second-line center for a contending team.
