On July 1st, on his first day of eligibility for a contract extension, Juraj Slafkovsky signed an eight-year extension worth $7.6 million per year.

Slafkovsky and Kent Hughes opted for stability over a big payday. This is a clear indication that Slafkovsky wants to stay in Montreal for a long time, and that Hughes and the organization have confidence in him.

The details of this agreement are now known, and it's always interesting to break down contracts, as the actual value is not the same as the cap hit.

The salary changes over the years, and there are signing bonuses, clauses, and several technicalities to be aware of.

In Slafkovsky's case, it's nothing major, but here's his contract broken down by year:

Slafkovsky 8 year $7.6M Cap Hit #GoHabsGo Extension:

Yr 1 3M Base & 7M Signing Bonus
Yr 2 7M Base & 3M SB
Yr 3 9M
Yr 4 7.8M
Year 5 to Year 8: 6M

Years 5 to 8 include 10 Team No Trade Clause

Looking closely, this means that for the second half of his contract, when he will be between 25 and 29 years old and in his prime, Slafkovsky will earn only $6 million per year in actual salary.

He has the potential to score a point per game and bring much more to the Canadiens with his intensity and toughness. He is seen as having the potential to become one of the best wingers in the NHL, and he will be earning $6 million in five years.

This is a real steal by Kent Hughes. For comparison, Brendan Gallagher currently earns more than that and scored 31 points last season.

If Slafkovsky continues to develop as he is now, he will be an important asset for a very long time, both in terms of performance and financially.
