Major: Those involved in the Team Canada Junior scandal face the possibility of a very long prison sentence
It's undoubtedly a case that has been making headlines for about two years, the Team Canada Junior 2018 scandal. We'll spare you the exact details since everyone is familiar with them, but the charges could be serious.
Five players, namely Carter Hart, Cal Foote, Michael McLoed, Dillon Dube, and Alex Formenton, went to London for the investigation. Alex Formenton, in particular, reported to the London police, consistently claiming his innocence.
According to Rick Westhead, if anyone is found guilty in this matter, the penalties could be very severe.
"Several criminal lawyers who specialize in (...) assault cases have told me over the past days they expected former 2018 World Juniors players facing prosecution for an alleged (...) assault in London, Ont., might face charges of (...) assault and forceable confinement.
Alex Formenton's attorney Daniel Brown told me today that the former Senators player has not been charged with either of those offences.
He declined to elaborate on what Formenton has been charged with.
If Formenton has been charged with common (...) assault, he faces a maximum 10 years in prison if he's found guilty.
People convicted of (...) assault face a maximum of 14 years.
(Toronto lawyer Alison Craig told me it's not uncommon for (...) assault charges to be upgraded after they are laid.)"
- Rick Westhead
It's important to note that the quote has not been done in its entirety to avoid repeating some more shocking terms.
The careers of one or more of these players could thus be automatically over if they are found guilty. This is a very hot and delicate case, so let's give the justice system a chance to do its work before passing judgment.
