At 20 years old, it's his first year in the pros, and he's making sure it's the only one in the American Hockey League (AHL). He is currently on a streak of seven consecutive games with at least one point, equaling a record held by P.K. Subban.
In 40 games, he has 28 points. Remember, he's a 20-year-old defenseman in his first year. That's extraordinary.
For comparison, Shane Wright, who tasted the NHL and AHL last year and is a 4th overall pick, has 30 points in 40 games as a 20-year-old forward.
It's certain that Mailloux would have been picked much earlier than the 31st if he hadn't asked teams not to select him. The Canadiens broke an unwritten rule by choosing him at 31.
However, it remains a steal for the organization. My prediction: Mailloux will be with the Canadiens next year and will become a star in the NHL within five years.
When you think about late first-round picks like Ryan Poehling, Nikita Scherbak, Michael McCarron, and many others, it's refreshing to finally see one who is performing well.
