The time is for mourning for the entire Johnny Gaudreau family and the Columbus Blue Jackets organization.

Indeed, the star forward will be greatly missed both as a human being and as a hockey player.

Without taking anything away from the man, who was simply extraordinary, let's now talk about the hockey impact for the Blue Jackets.

Johnny Gaudreau's tenure as a center is automatically over following his death, which puts the team in a difficult position to reach the salary floor of $65 million.

Gary Bettman might therefore have the opportunity to bypass this rule and grant an exemption to the organization, as this is a unique and uncontrollable event.

"The NBA often grants exceptions in similar situations, such as the exception for severely injured players, which allows teams to replace players who are out for the season due to serious injury or death.

Given the unique and tragic nature of this situation, the NHL should consider a similar exemption for the Blue Jackets, at least for the 2024-2025 season." - The Hockey News

This is so well put! Moreover, Gary Bettman likes to follow the NBA's lead, so it shouldn't be too difficult for him to comply.

Johnny Gaudreau will be greatly missed by the Blue Jackets, and he will be irreplaceable. The organization should not have to pay the price because of a tragedy.
