Indeed, we really thought that Kent Hughes was in the picture and that Cole Caufield's best friend could land in Montreal, but it ultimately didn't happen.
There was a big rumor about a nearly completed trade between the Canadiens and the Ducks. Trevor Zegras, Logan Mailloux and draft picks were involved, including the 21st overall pick (Michael Hage).
The Canadiens would have completed this transaction on the draft floor, in Las Vegas, but from what we understand, the fact that Michael Hage was still available changed the situation.
This rumor comes from the site Habsolument Fan, but no one has confirmed the information. That said, no one has denied it either, so you can make of it what you want. Personally, I believe there is some truth to it, and Elliotte Friedman seems to believe so as well.
This means that there were really strong intentions on Kent Hughes' part to complete a transaction to acquire Trevor Zegras.
The GM ultimately decided to go with Patrik Laine, who cost much less to acquire than Trevor Zegras, while having the potential to score as many, if not more points than Zegras. When he returns from his injury, he will be an important player for the Canadiens.
