There was a lot of speculation about a possible trade involving Jake Allen and the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday morning. Matt Murley announced that the trade was finalized, but some sources contradicted the news shortly afterward.

The damage was done, and the news had already spread widely. However, Darren Dreger wants to set the record straight.

"There is no Jake Allen deal to Colorado. The two clubs haven't spoken in days but there has been previous discussions. Nothing close at this stage."

- Darren Dreger

So, a trade between the two teams involving Jake Allen might still happen, but it's currently on hold. A player has been identified, and it makes perfect sense, given the Canadiens' lack of depth at center.

"We know that there have been discussions between the Habs and the Avs for Jake Allen. We agree that the goalie hasn't been delivering inspired performances lately. But a change of scenery + better defense... who knows.

And Ryan Johansen (very similar contract) has been relegated to the 4th-line center role in Colorado and played 12 minutes last night. Clearly, there's something to work on here."

- Marc-Olivier Beaudoin

These are just speculations, but it makes a lot of sense. The Avalanche will likely have to part ways with a contract at least equivalent to Allen's to acquire him, and Kent Hughes is well aware of that.

It wouldn't be surprising to see a center like Johansen land in Montreal. This involves a forward who has already scored over 60 points five times in his career.

A noteworthy point: Johansen is indeed paid 8 million per year, but the Predators retain 50% of his salary. So, he counts as 4 million against the salary cap, and Jake Allen is worth 3.85 million.

Given that the goaltender situation is a problem for the Canadiens and Johansen is no longer in the plans for Colorado, this transaction could benefit both teams.
