Kent Hughes has made two massive acquisitions that change everything for the Montreal Canadiens
It could be said that the summer for Kent Hughes and the Canadiens was relatively quiet. More action was seen towards the end, with the trades of Jeff Petry and Casey DeSmith.
However, the GM was quite active on the Laval Rocket front. Several signings and departures, but all in all, the Canadiens' AHL affiliate looks good.
The limited NHL-level moves don't mean that nothing significant was done. Two key signings were made by Kent Hughes, and Anthony Martineau pointed this out, rightly so.
"Without the immense summer work (two decisions in particular) by Kent Hughes, the Canadiens would be in serious trouble right now. In fact, within the team, many, including MSL (Martin St-Louis), are impressed by their GM."
- Anthony Martineau, TVA Sports
In simple terms, the contract extension for Sean Monahan is one of them. The other is the acquisition of Alex Newhook. Without these two moves, the Canadiens would be in serious trouble with the injuries to Kirby Dach and Christian Dvorak.
It's probably the only reason the Canadiens still have a chance not to finish the year at the bottom of the standings, considering Dach's loss. Center depth makes a significant difference.
